The Democracy Experiment Institute

About TDE Institute

We question democracy not because we doubt its value, but because we believe rigorous inquiry is the highest form of commitment to it.

A Different Kind of Inquiry

The Institute has evolved through several phases — from its origins as The Institute for the Advancement of Democracy in 2015 to its present form — but its founding commitment has remained constant. We question democracy not because we doubt its value, but because we believe rigorous inquiry is the highest form of commitment.

Democracy is not a destination but a continuous experiment — one whose outcome depends entirely on our willingness to examine its failures with the same honesty we bring to its ideals.

Free from partisan allegiance or ideological orthodoxy, the Institute produces research that examines democratic failures with the same discipline we bring to its achievements. Our partners and associates span the full breadth of the political spectrum, including those who challenge democratic premises themselves.

We hold that genuine pluralism demands hearing all positions, and that the tensions of polarisation, honestly engaged, can illuminate the ground where productive dialogue becomes possible.

What We Are Here to Do

The Democracy Experiment Institute advances the understanding and practice of democratic governance through rigorous, nonpartisan research that confronts what most institutions prefer to ignore: democracy's structural weaknesses that can undermine it from within.

We bridge scholarship and political practice to identify vulnerabilities in democratic systems — their institutions, citizenries, international commitments, and treatment of populations — and translate that knowledge into strategies for reform.

The study of democracy must serve not the preservation of comfortable assumptions, but the honest reckoning democratic governance demands if it is to survive its own contradictions.

The World We Work Toward

TDE Institute works toward a political landscape in which democratic governance is held to the same standard of rigorous scrutiny applied to the problems it claims to solve. That means research findings that reach decision-makers, analytical frameworks that reshape policy debates, and a scholarly community that measures its success not by publication alone but by demonstrable impact on the quality of democratic practice.

We envision an ecosystem in which the division between academic inquiry and institutional reform is structural rather than inevitable — one where sustained collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and civic actors produces governance that is more responsive, more accountable, and more resilient to the internal pressures that democratic systems generate by their own design.

Independence Through Transparency

TDE Institute operates as an independent, nonpartisan research institute. Our work is funded through a combination of individual donors, institutional partnerships, foundation support, and fellowship programme contributions. We do not accept funding that conditions our research agenda or conclusions.

A full list of funding sources and institutional partners will be published in our Annual Report. For partnership or sponsorship enquiries, contact [email protected].
